Tony the Tour Guy's Mostly 1970s NYC History Blog

Welcome to Tony the Tour Guy's blog! Here we feature Tony's rants about various topics in New York City history, with particular emphasis upon that typically unappreciated decade, the Seventies. For our purposes, the era began roughly at the time when Jimi Hendrix died (9/18/70) and ended with the presidency of Ronald Reagan and the freedom of the Iran hostages (1/20/81). We cover everything from Pet Rocks to the Moonies to Checker Taxicabs here, and welcome your participation.

The Orange Julius

Can anyone remember the Orange Julius stands around town? I used to frequent one near about 46 Street and 7 Ave. An Orange Julius was a fantastic concoction made from orange juice, ice and some sort of white powder. They didn't tell you what it was, but I suspect the mix contained powdered milk and maybe malt. Regardless, an Orange Julius was thick, creamy, cold and fantastic.

Orqnge Juliuses were AWESOME! I loved them. They used to prliferate in the larger subway stations, like Times Square and Grand Central. D.

p.s., I don't remember the Schaeffer ads in Spanish, but I'm not surprised. Latinos loved the stuff along with "la cerveza Raingol'."

When we would go to Sunset Park the guys would all be drinking Schaeffer, or "Chaeper," as some pronounced it.

Schaeffer was also the more-or-less official beer of the Bronx Irish Catholics from Parkchester.

Oh, and for kids there was Malta Schaeffer, the non-alcoholic, incredibly sweet malt drink. I recall their ads in Spanish, showing a bunch of little school kids charging for a vendor's cart while they sang

Tome malta
La Malta Schaeffer...
