Tony the Tour Guy's Mostly 1970s NYC History Blog

Welcome to Tony the Tour Guy's blog! Here we feature Tony's rants about various topics in New York City history, with particular emphasis upon that typically unappreciated decade, the Seventies. For our purposes, the era began roughly at the time when Jimi Hendrix died (9/18/70) and ended with the presidency of Ronald Reagan and the freedom of the Iran hostages (1/20/81). We cover everything from Pet Rocks to the Moonies to Checker Taxicabs here, and welcome your participation.

Why did so many of us despise the Osmonds?

From 1976 to 1979 Donny and Marie Osmond had a hugely popular variety show. This followed their years of success in the bubblegum pop music business, in which they sold millions of records. Yet to most New Yorkers over 14, the Osmonds were "uncool," silly and fake. Why? Let's look at some common explanations:

  1. They were Mormons. And so were the guys in Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Nobody cared about that with the fat guys from Canada.
  2. They were clean. Hell, Frank Zappa never used drugs. Nor did The Boss. And what about the King of Squeaky Clean, John Denver?
  3. They couldn't sing. Now wait. Donny and Marie Osmond both went on to sing in Broadway shows. You can't be tone deaf and make it on Broadway.
No, these reasons don't make sense. For the real reason, friends, we need look no further than their theme song - "I'm a little bit Country. I'm a little bit Rock and Roll." Put the emphasis upon "little bit." Good country and rock music comes from the gut, from the tough lives of everyday men and women. It's a little rough around the edges, sometimes VERY rough, but that's how Life is. Donny and Marie, along with their umpteen relatives, tried so hard to present a Disney-esque show, devoid of the real spirit of these forms of music. And, just like Disney's cartoons, they reeked of falsehood.

Fair comments Tony, but you also have to remember that the Donny and Marie shows were mainly family entertainment and meant to be fun. If you look 'outside' the shows and listen to their music on their albums...i.e Marie's Paper Roses Album and The Osmonds Phase III album, then thats where you would hear music from the gut. They are all still doing very well today so they must have done something right....:)

Yes. There was a lot of family stuff back then.

Actually, my cousin had the Osmonds Phase 3 album, and I heard it. Don't know how gutsy "Down by the Lazy River" is. Indeed, it's the superficiality trying to be serious that people found so annoying about the Osmonds. Yes, people like Madonna are superficial to the core, but at least they don't try to hide it.

The Seventies also featured stuff like "Disco Duck," "Teddy Bear's Mom" and Barry Manilow" and they all sold lots of records! We used to have a saying when I was a kid:

"Eat doggie doo. Eight million flies can't be wrong."

The Osmonds weren't "despised" Tony. They just weren't taken seriously. True some of their stuff may have been a bit cheesy but by no means were they terrible. If they really were hated as you make them out to be, they wouldn't still be touring, nor would they have won all those gold records. I also don't like how sometimes when compared to the Jackson 5, the Jacksons are looked on as marvels and the Osmonds as weirdos. simply because of one recorded song they did which became their biggest hit. That's just sad. Both groups are as equally talented and had mutual respect for each other. Everyone keeps forgettibg they were best friends and supported each other. Not everyone would like the Osmonds and I respect your opinion, but I actually found this blog very hard to read. It just feels like another harsh critic complaint trying to find something else wrong with a group that is still highly successful. Like Jane said, they obviously must have done something right to last over 50 years and no one seems to have got fed up with them. I'm sorry to write this but this is just what I think.

I'd also like to add about the Donny and Marie show. As much as you would hate it, it was actually a huge hit. Even the critics enjoyed it. I can see why you wouldn't like it, but many people I know loved it. They cna get away with a variety show being cheesy because of course that was all just for fun, but their singing? I really have to disagree there. Merrill is one of the best rock singers about.

I wouldn't go as far as despised, as I didn't know anyone that outright "despised" them. Even the word hate is too strong. I knew a few people that thought they were too sickly, but never outright despise them. Maybe you mixed with people who didn't like that sort of thing.
Despite your criticism of Donny abnd Marie, they were a huge success worldwide. It's understandable if you didn't like them but I thought they were fun to watch and they were even nominated Golden Globes and Primetime Emmys for their show.
About the Osmonds themselves. I really don't know why you're saying "Down By the Lazy River" was superficial. That was actually one of their BEST songs they had ever done. Even those who don't like The Osmonds have fully admitted to that.I prefer the original four Osmonds (Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay) performing and I think if Merrill was the lead singer all the way through, instead of Donny, there may have been a different opinion about them. You may have found them annoying, but there's no denying they were extremely talented. If you don't like them then maybe it's best to not write a rant blog as it could easily be taken the wrong way.(I know this blog's old now)

Like all entertainers, The Osmonds had fans but everyone didn't love them. I get it if they weren't your personal taste. You have an obvious bias against their religion that comes out in other posts, too. They certainly weren't despised but were successful. Marie Osmond turned down the part of Sandy in Grease. The Osmonds toured all over the world and were even bigger in Japan than the U.S. They've been entertaining for almost 60 years. Record sales say it all. "...the Osmond family has collectively been awarded 47 gold and platinum records--surpassing both Elvis' and the Beatles' best single year success by being honored with nine gold records in 1971"

funny, the people that actually 'liked' these morons... wonder what their everyday life is like - just like the pathetic fantasy that the Osmonds tried to portray on tv... doesnt everyone remembe all the problems they had latter, all the controversies, all the demeaining bs about them as a whole... The Osmonds were 1970's garbage, plain and simple... As for 'still doing shows'... yeah, only for the idiots that will still go see them...
